How this is calculated
- Deduct EFKA employee social insurance at 13.37% of gross salary (private sector), applied on a monthly ceiling of 7,761.94 EUR, so contributions stop rising above that ceiling.
- Compute taxable income as gross salary minus EFKA. Mandatory social contributions are deductible from the income-tax base for employees.
- Apply the progressive 2026 scale to taxable income: 9% up to 10,000 EUR, 20% to 20,000, 26% to 30,000, 34% to 40,000, 39% to 60,000 and 44% above 60,000.
- Subtract the employee tax reduction (meiosi forou): 777 EUR for a taxpayer with no children, reduced by 20 EUR for every 1,000 EUR of taxable income above 12,000 EUR, until it reaches zero. Take-home pay = gross minus EFKA minus income tax.
FAQ
Are social security contributions deducted before income tax?
Yes. For employees, EFKA contributions (13.37%) are deducted from gross to arrive at taxable income, and the tax scale is then applied to that lower figure. This is why the effective tax is lower than applying the scale to the full gross.
What is the meiosi forou tax reduction?
It is a reduction of the calculated income tax, 777 EUR for a taxpayer with no children (higher with children). It is progressively reduced by 20 EUR for each 1,000 EUR of taxable income above 12,000 EUR, so higher earners receive little or none of it.
Did the 2026 reform change the tax rates?
Yes. Law 5246/2025 cut several bracket rates (for example the second band from 22% to 20% and the third from 28% to 26%) and inserted a new 39% band between 40,000 and 60,000 EUR, so the top 44% rate now starts above 60,000 EUR. Reduced scales also apply for taxpayers under 30 and by number of children.
Does this calculator cover the EFKA ceiling and 14 salaries?
It applies the 2026 EFKA monthly ceiling of 7,761.94 EUR. It models 12 monthly payments; where extra (13th/14th) payments or holiday bonuses apply, enter your actual annual gross to reflect them. Confirm current figures with AADE and e-EFKA.
